MEMO #1: Svend-Erik Skaaning

“Of course, democracies are not perfect, and their advantages are not without exceptions, but overall, it is the least bad form of governance when considering the well-being and welfare of the population”
– Svend-Erik Skaaning

What is a characteristic of democracies deserve greater awareness or appreciation?

Read Svend-Erik Skaaning’s answer:

Some believe that democracies are too slow, pandering, incompetent, and short-sighted to solve the major problems facing the world, ranging from warfare to economy, welfare, and climate. Critics often highlight China instead, where the government has the necessary knowledge and power to implement its plans.

However, upon closer examination, it is evident that democratic politicians typically have a greater motivation to take care of the interests of the people. The fundamental equality of citizens implies that they are entitled to protection, and if politicians do not live up to the trust of the citizens, voters have the opportunity to remove them in the next election. The fundamental equality of citizens implies that they are entitled to protection, and if politicians do not live up to the trust of the citizens, voters have the opportunity to remove them in the next election.

Therefore, it is not a coincidence that historically, democracies have performed better than dictatorships. Overall, democracies fare no worse than dictatorships in terms of military success, wealth, welfare, and environmental protection. Additionally, they have the advantage of a much lower risk of civil wars and never go to war against each other. Finally, they have a strong tendency to protect their citizens from abuse and serve as a defence against ideological fantasies that have often led to famines and genocides. Of course, democracies are not perfect, and their advantages are not without exceptions, but overall, it is the least bad form of governance when considering the well-being and welfare of the population.
